These awards are presented as a mark of respect for the work of the members of the Parliament. In collaboration with IIT Madras.. Sansad Ratna Awards are being presented since 2010. As per the suggestion of the former President of the country and science genius APJ Abdul Kalam, these awards have been started in his honour. The first edition was held in Chennai.. He himself participated in that event. Samsad Ratna Awards are not given by the Government of India. However, people in the government are being included in the jury.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal is the Chairman of the Jury of the Sansad Ratna Awards. Also, ex-Chairman of Central Election Commission TS Krishnamurthy is acting as Co-Chairman. A jury selects the winners for the awards based on questions asked by Members of Parliament, Private Members’ Bills introduced, debates initiated, attendance, funds spent, etc. Members’ performance data is considered by the jury based on information provided by PRS Legislative Research.
So far 90 parliamentarians have been given these awards. The latest is the 13th edition. The award ceremony will be held on March 25 in New Delhi.
