Corona’s new ‘strain’ Deltacron amidst the panic of Omicron, how dangerous? Know what experts say – cyprus discover covid deltacron variant claimed combination of omicron and delta ntc

Story Highlights

  • A Cyprus researcher has discovered a new strain
  • So far 25 patients of DeltaCron have been found in Cyprus

New forms of corona are coming to the fore, due to which the apprehensions about this epidemic are deepening. Amidst the threat of the Omicron variant of the corona virus, a scientist from Cyprus has detected a new strain of corona. It is said to be a mix of Delta and Omicron variants of Corona. It has been named Deltacron.

Omicron has been said to be the fastest-spreading corona variant ever, while Delta wreaked havoc in many countries last year. In such a situation, what will be the dangers of their mixed new variants, it can be guessed.

The Cyprus researchers sent their findings to GISAID this week. GISAID is an international database that tracks viruses. According to international media reports, Cyprus has received 25 cases of DeltaCron so far. However, no country has confirmed this yet.

Dr. Leondios Kostriakis, head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology at the University of Cyprus, said the frequency of mutations was higher among hospitalized patients, indicating a relationship between the new variant and hospitalization.

How different is this variant from Delta?
He also emphasized that the genetic background of this new variant is similar to that of Delta. Along with this, some mutations of Omicron have been found in it. Cyprus Health Minister Mikhlis Hadipantelas said that there is no need to worry about the new variant at the moment.

Some virologists on Deltacron have said that this is not a new variant. It cannot be traced or plotted on the phylogenetic tree of the virus. Sunit K Singh, Professor of Molecular Immunology and Virology, Banaras Hindu University, Institute of Medical Science, Molecular Immunology and Virology said, “It is in the nature of an RNA virus. Like SARS-COV-2 to mutate specifically to have a respiratory nature .While we may find many mutations, its recombinant forms need to be processed. It will not prove to be so dangerous.”
