CWG 2022: Anshu Malik won India’s first medal in wrestling, won silver medal

India’s female wrestler Anshu Malik has got a silver medal in the women’s 57 kg weight category in the Commonwealth Games-2022. In the final match, Anshu was defeated by Odunayo Folsado of Nigeria 6-4 to win the gold medal. In this way Anshu’s dream of winning gold medal in these games was shattered. Today is also Anshu’s birthday.

Anshu did not give much chance to the Nigerian in the beginning and made a good position but Odunayo suddenly changed his stake and took two points by taking down. Odunaya’s leg attack is good and keeping this in mind, Anshu kept the Nigerian off the feet. Odunayo, however, launched a leg attack and took two more points from the take-down to end the first round with a 4-0 lead.

The Nigerian player also defended his points brilliantly and did not give opportunities to Anshu to collect points while attacking. Although the Nigerian players became more defensive and due to this they were also reprimanded by the referee but Anshu still could not beat them. Anshu appealed about the last bet he had made but this appeal was rejected and Anshu got the silver medal.

Anshu dominated every match before this. She registered technical superiority (10-0) victories over Australia’s Irene Simionidis in the quarterfinals and Nethmi Poruthotage of Sri Lanka in the semifinals.

It was expected that Anshu would end the wait for her gold medal in the big tournaments of international level by winning the gold medal in these games but it could not happen. Anshu had earlier lost in the final at the World Championships held in Oslo last year and could only win a silver medal. However, she was successful in winning the gold medal in the Asian Championships held in 2021. In 2022, she was successful in winning a silver medal in the same championship in Ulaanbaatar.
