Sometimes there is a mistake of calling it Independence Day only then people start counting the mistake. Do you know that this day was actually celebrated as Independence Day. That too, not for a year or two, for 18 years, 26 January was celebrated as Independence Day. At that time there was no custom to celebrate on 15th August. Because till then the country had not become independent.

This revolutionary history of India was created on 26 January 1930. Whose foundation was laid in December 1929. When a session of the Indian National Congress was held in Lahore. In this session, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru proposed Purna Swaraj. In which it was said that by 26 January 1930, if the British did not make them Dominium, then India would declare itself independent. The resolution was passed and the day came on 26 January 1930. But the British did not accept it. India was not given its dominion. After which the Congress itself declared 26 January 1930 as Purna Swaraj Day. After this, a series of active movements also started. Jawaharlal Nehru also unfurled the flag of India on 26 January 1930. But the movement continued. The British government liberated the country in 1947. Earlier, every year the agitators continued to celebrate Independence Day on 26 January and hoisted the tricolor.

The British officially declared India an independent nation on 15 August 1947. After which apparently Independence Day was to be celebrated on this day. The aspiration of those who agitated for independence was that the importance of 26 January should not be lost. The country’s own constitution came into force three years after independence. To make this constitution memorable for Babasaheb Ambedkar and the historic day of 26 January, the constitution was implemented on 26 January 1950.

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, popularly known as the framer of the constitution, wrote the constitution by taking almost 2 years and more than 11 months. 22 committees were formed for constitution making. The most important of which was the Drafting Committee. Babasaheb was the chairman of this committee. He submitted the constitution to the President of the Constituent Assembly, Rajendra Prasad, on 26 November 1949. Which was implemented in the coming 26 January i.e. 26 January 1950.
