digital desk, Guwahati. In Assam, 7 more people, including a foreign returnee, have tested positive for Omicron, taking the number of new COVID-19 variants to 9. Officials gave this information on Friday.

Health officials said eight of the nine patients have no travel history. Assam is the third state among the eight northeastern states to report Omicron cases, after Manipur (one case) and Meghalaya (five cases).

Omicron’s first report in Assam was received on Wednesday after a person who had returned from Saudi Arabia tested positive.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that all new COVID-19 positive cases will be treated as suspected omicron or delta variant of COVID-19 and treatment of the patient will be started accordingly, as the genome sequencing reports are at least Comes after five days.

State Information, Public Relations and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Piyush Hazarika has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now in home isolation.

An IANS analysis of the Assam Health Department report said that the daily positivity rate has increased by 0.77 per cent to 2.37 per cent in the last one week. According to reports, 192 new cases have been reported on Friday, 475 on Tuesday and 844 on Thursday.

The total Covid-19 active cases stood at 871 on Friday and rose to 2,689 on Thursday.

Out of the 34 districts of Assam, four districts have the highest growth of COVID cases with Kamrup (Metro) district (where Guwahati’s main city and capital Dispur falls) which reported 369 active cases on Thursday, followed by Jorhat. 57, 52 cases have been reported in Kamrup (rural) and 50 in Darang district.
