Prisoner swallows mobile phone, hospitalized Prisoner swallows mobile phone in Tihar, hospitalized

Digital Desk, New Delhi. An inmate lodged in the national capital’s Tihar Jail has been admitted to a hospital after swallowing a mobile phone. An official gave this information here on Friday.

Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel told IANS that the incident happened on January 5.

The DG said, when our staff approached him on the basis of suspicion, a prisoner swallowed a mobile phone in jail number one of Tihar.

He said that the said prisoner was immediately taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in the city.

Goyal said that though his condition was fine till now, the mobile phone was still inside his body.

Tihar Jail is strengthening its security system after receiving a huge response after its officers were caught providing facilities to the inmates.

During the last six months in Tihar Jail, a case has been registered against more than 40 officials by various law enforcement agencies for giving one or the other benefit to the prisoners.

Goel, in an earlier interview with IANS, had said that Tihar Jail will soon have two X-ray based human body scanners, which can prevent the infiltration of illegal objects and gadgets inside the jail premises.

The use of mobile phones by prisoners is a serious concern. However, this can be tackled with the use of appropriate technology.

Goyal said that they are setting up three new towers inside the jail premises, which will limit the mobile signal emanating from the jail.

All these measures are steps in the right direction and may prove beneficial in future, he added.
