From the country’s first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi to the first UPSC topper to come from Jammu and Kashmir, from former Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh to Chhattisgarh’s young IAS OP Chaudhary, AK Sharma, close to PM Narendra Modi, to CM Yogi Till Aseem Arun, close to Adityanath, there have been many IAS, IPS or other officers who left the civil service and chose the path of politics and took VRS.
When an officer takes retirement before the prescribed age of retirement, it is called VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme) i.e. Voluntary Retirement. Usually, whenever an officer takes VRS, there must be some reason or the other.
Just like Kanpur Police Commissioner IPS Asim Arun Kumar took VRS. Asim Arun did this because he had to join the Bharatiya Janata Party and possibly contest the assembly elections.
Asim Arun Kumar is not the first officer who has done this, many names have come in this list even before this. The name of 1996 batch PPS and ED officer Rajeshwar Singh is going on in discussion along with Arun Kumar.
Rajeshwar Singh was in the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and had applied for VRS in August 2021. Now his VRS has been approved. Rajeshwar Singh was once in the UP Police and was recognized as an encounter specialist. It is being claimed in media reports that they can also join BJP and contest the assembly elections in UP.
Kanpur Police Commissioner Aseem Arun accepts VRS, can contest from this seat on BJP ticket
Gupteshwar Pandey had brought VRS in the discussion
The UP assembly elections are being held in the midst of the third wave of corona, a wave of this virus had gone even when the Bihar assembly elections were held in 2020. The death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh was the center of discussion in this election and an important point in this center was the then DGP of Bihar Gupteshwar Pandey.
Gupteshwar Pandey left the post of DGP and took VRS and joined Nitish Kumar’s party Janata Dal United. Gupteshwar Pandey had intended to contest from the Buxar seat, but this seat had gone to the BJP in alliance and thus Gupteshwar Pandey’s ambitions were ruined even after taking VRS.
Arvind Kumar Sharma: 1988 batch Gujarat cadre IAS Arvind Kumar Sharma i.e. AK Sharma is currently the vice-president in the UP BJP. AK Sharma took VRS in early 2021. Sharma is considered close to PM Narendra Modi. From Gujarat to the central government, AK Sharma has worked with Modi in the government. Last year, when he left the service and came to Lucknow, there were discussions that he would be given an important role in the Yogi government of UP. There were also reports of tussle and eventually he was given the post of vice-president in the party.
‘Sharmaji’ will be the CM of Uttar Pradesh in future, announces former BJP MP Harinarayan Rajbhar
OP Chowdhary: Om Prakash Chaudhary is the name who brought glory to Chhattisgarh by winning the Civil Services. When OP Chaudhary, a 2005 batch IAS officer, joined the service, he was just 23 years old. It was a matter of pride for the entire state, because since the formation of Chhattisgarh in the year 2000, this was the first time that a son of the soil here became an IAS.
While serving, OP Chaudhary earned a name. Saw the tenure of the BJP government under the leadership of Raman Singh and left the job when the 2018 assembly elections came. Contested from Kharsia seat on BJP ticket but lost. Let us tell you that there was a one-sided wave of Congress in this election and BJP was completely destroyed, OP Chaudhary also got swept away in the same row. It is said that after the election defeat, OP Chaudhary got an opportunity to join the service but he did not accept it.
Shah Faesal: Shah Faesal, who topped the UPSC in 2010, also took VRS. Shah Faesal made the record of becoming the topper for the first time from Jammu and Kashmir. And citing the same situation in Jammu and Kashmir, he took VRS in 2019. He also formed his own separate political party. But he soon became disillusioned and turned away from politics.
When two IPS clash in elections
IPS Humayun Kabir had resigned from his service in January 2021. He was the police commissioner of Chandannagar in West Bengal. A few days later, he joined the Trinamool Congress during a rally in the presence of Mamata Banerjee. Mamta Banerjee gave him ticket from Debra assembly seat and he won the election.
The interesting thing is that Humayun Kabir Bharti Ghosh She herself was once an IPS. Bharti Ghosh had taken VRS in January 2018 itself and joined BJP. In 2019, Bharti Ghosh contested from Ghatal Lok Sabha seat but lost to TMC candidate even in Modi wave. After this, in 2021, BJP fielded her against Humayun Kabir from Debra seat, and in the meantime Mamta wave overshadowed her and she lost again.
Let us tell you that Bharti Ghosh has been known as a capable and flamboyant officer. She has studied at Harvard University and London School of Economics. Bharti Ghosh is currently the national spokesperson of the BJP, while Humayun Kabir is a minister in the Mamta government.
RS Praveen Kumar: The VRS of 1995 batch IPS officer RS Praveen Kumar was approved in July 2021. He took this decision after 26 years of service. Announcing his decision, Praveen Kumar had said that he wants to fulfill the unfulfilled dreams of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram related to social justice. With this purpose, Praveen Kumar joined Mayawati’s party BSP. At present, he is the Telangana State Coordinator of the BSP and is actively doing politics.
Satyapal Singh: Former Mumbai Police Commissioner and Lok Sabha MP from Baghpat in UP, Satyapal Singh has also been a Union Minister in the first term of the Modi government. 1980 batch IPS of Maharashtra cadre Satyapal Singh had taken VRS in January 2014. When he took this decision, then he was handling the responsibility of Police Commissioner of Mumbai. Freed from here, Satyapal Singh joined BJP and in 2014 contested from Baghpat Lok Sabha seat in western UP on a party ticket. He won and also became a minister at the Centre. In 2019, he again became an MP from here, but this time he is not a minister.
HK Patel: HK Patel, a 2005 batch IAS officer, has also taken VRS last year. He has served in important positions in the Government of Gujarat. According to media reports, Patel can contest on a BJP ticket in the assembly elections to be held later this year.
The people mentioned above are those officers who have not left the service for a long time and entered politics. But old and big names have also been enough in the list of those who become leaders from officers.
These eminent leaders have also been officers
• Former Chhattisgarh CM Ajit Jogi was selected for both IPS and IAS services. He has also been the DM.
• Bihar cadre IAS Yashwant Sinha has held big positions in BJP. He has also been the Finance Minister in the Government of India. Currently in TMC.
• Meira Kumar was an IFS officer, who was later also the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
• Former Union Minister Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has also been an IFS.

Apart from these, minister Hardeep Singh Puri has also been IFS in the current Modi cabinet. Another Union Minister RK Singh has been IAS. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was also earlier as a secretary in the Modi government. Jaishankar has been an IFS officer.
